Yorkshire Building Society is one of the largest building societies in the UK with 1.9 million members and assets of £17.6 billion.

The society is a mutual organisation which means it is owned by, and run for, the benefit of its members and not outside shareholders.

The Yorkshire was the first building society to commit itself to remaining a mutual at a time when some of it's rivals decided to become banks. In this and many other ways, it has led the way in demonstrating that membership of a mutual building society brings a whole range of important benefits to investors and borrowers alike.

Yorkshire Building Society are committed to working with local communities through their intermal volunteering scheme, Actionteering, and the Community Investment Fund.

Community Investment Fund (CIF)

Community Investment Fund (CIF) was created to have a positive impact in local communities in which the Society operates and assist those causes that would otherwise fall outside the Charitable Foundation's criteria.

Our support is focussed on local communities through a combination of financial giving, voluntary activities, linking/working with community groups and enterprises eg, schools, sports clubs and local authorities. 

Actionteering

Feedback from our staff and members gives wholehearted approval of us playing an active role in the local community. We do this through involvement with the Charitable Foundation and through our Actionteering employee volunteer initiative. We work closely with the community providing hands-on help. For example two teams of our senior managers completed a community challenge involving repainting the exterior of a building used by a local group and clearing an overgrown garden at a local Town Hall and Community Centre. Staff also provide business mentoring help to charities
